Project 1 - Magazine

I knew before I started the course what the first project would be. Students showed me at the open house the magazines they’ve made and why. This project was also the reason I decided that I wanted to do the course. I appreciated that the school valued creativity and wasn’t all by the book.

Growing up I loved reading and collecting magazines. So, I knew exactly what kind of design and style of magazine I wanted to do. The task was to create a magazine on a specific country or culture, and to really dig deep and explore the culture you’re researching. My friends and I all like K-pop so we quickly decided that the country to do our magazine on would be Korea. I created a moodboard based on our inspiration we agreed on (see below) and we started designing the magazine from there.

In this project I didn’t have a very important role. I brought a lot to the table about the magazine, without having team leader responsibility. This worked well for me in this project because I can’t deal very well with the pressure of being a teamleader, especially if I am unsure about the project.

We were all assigned to write 3 main articles. I wrote 1 big piece and 2 smaller entertainment pieces. My big piece was about the Burning Sun incident, a scandal that took over Korea a few years ago, involving a few of the biggest names in K-pop. It took me about 2 weeks to write it and it is some of my best work. My other 2 articles were more of a lighter read. I talked about different K-pop songs that meant a lot to me and a complete timeline of K-pop.
